Most-tweeted moments of the State of the Union (infographic)
Twitter has put together an infographic analyzing the tweets from last night’s State of the Union debate. It counted 766,681 tweets that referenced the State of the Union or one of its hashtags, as well as 548 tweets from members of Congress.
The top moment was President Obama’s joke, “I guess it was worth crying over spilled milk,” which generated 14,131 tweets-per-minute. And as you might imagine, the State of the Union was the most social show on TV last night.
This is the first time we’ve seen Twitter release an infographic so quickly after a major event, and it looks like this trend will continue, at least with the election. “Twitter is the real-time index to the election,” explains an email from Twitter. “Stay tuned for more insights and analysis around key moments throughout the election year from Twitter.” Here’s the infographic…

Arab League Syria mission extended by month
- NEW: ElBaradei approached for envoy role in Syria
- NEW: 60 people were killed in Syria Tuesday, opposition group says
- Syria's foreign minister says Russia, Iran support his country
- Bloc of Gulf Arab nations withdraw observers from Arab League mission
Damascus, Syria (CNN) -- Syria has extended the Arab League monitors' mission for a month, foreign ministry spokesman Jihad Makdessi told CNN Tuesday.
This comes after the league voted Sunday to extend the mission. Syrian media quoted the foreign ministry as saying the mission will last until February 22. Foreign Minister Walid Moallem sent a letter to Arab League Secretary-General Nabil el-Araby notifying him of Syria's agreement to the extension.
But the mission took a hit when it lost a chunk of its manpower Tuesday.
CNN's Nic Robertson on covering Syria
The six nations from the Gulf Cooperation Council withdrew its observers because of the persistence of bloodshed in Syria and the government's "lack of commitment" to adhere fully to the plan it agreed to with the Arab League.
The bloc includes Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain and Oman. Saudi Arabia decided to pull out its monitors Sunday, and the other countries in the bloc followed Tuesday.
Ahmed Marai, an Arab League official in Cairo, told CNN that 55 monitors from Gulf Cooperation Council countries have been withdrawn from the mission. The council called on other Arab countries to put pressure on Syria so it will implement Arab League decisions.
It is also calling for the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council -- the United States, France, Britain, Russia and China -- and other council members to ratchet up pressure on the regime. It wants the Security Council to support the Arab League's Syrian initiative by passing a resolution.
The Gulf Cooperation Council has a lot of pull in the region. It brokered a presidential transition plan in Yemen and sent troops to Bahrain during the unrest there.
The 22-member Arab League has called on Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's regime to stop violence against civilians, free political detainees, remove tanks and weapons from cities, and allow outsiders -- including the international news media -- to travel freely in Syria.
There are close to 100 monitors at present. Anwar Malek, a former Arab League monitor from Algeria who has criticized the mission, said he expected more monitors to withdraw after he slammed the effort earlier this month. He said snipers targeted his car after he spoke out.
"Not a single monitor I met was happy or felt safe on the ground," Malek said.
The league is working on a proposal for al-Assad to transfer power to his vice president following the formation of a national unity government.
The group's plan calls for the government to start talks with the opposition within two weeks and for the formation of a new government within two months. A new constitutional council would follow, as would a plan for parliamentary and presidential elections.
The proposal is the clearest statement yet from the Arab League on what the league's member states would like to see happen in Syria. The league plans to take the idea to the United Nations in a bid to build international support.
El-Araby and Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Jasem Al Hamad sent a letter to the United Nations Tuesday requesting a meeting with Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on the league's proposed national unity government for Syria, according to an Arab League official. The official asked not to be named because he is not authorized to speak with the media.
The league does not want military intervention in tackling the crisis but is requesting the support of the U.N. Security Council for its initiative, the official said.
Ban and el-Araby spoke by phone Monday and Ban "reiterated the readiness of the United Nations to provide technical support in the form of training for observers," said U.N. spokesman Martin Nesirky.
El-Araby has offered Egyptian reform leader Mohamed ElBaradei a role as a special political envoy to Syria, ElBaradei's media officer said. ElBaradei, a Nobel laureate and former head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, has not accepted or refused.
Susan Rice, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, said the situation in Syria "continues to deteriorate dramatically" and the Security Council "should fully support the Arab League's efforts to broker an end to the bloodshed and a peaceful transition to democracy in Syria."
"Despite the presence of Arab League monitors, the (al-Assad) regime is ignoring its commitments to the Arab League plan, including by failing to end all acts of violence and to protect Syrian civilians. Scores of civilians are killed every day. Thousands of political detainees remain incarcerated across the country, many at serious risk of torture. As a result of the regime's failure to fulfill the requirements of the Arab League plan, there are more and more calls from the region for Security Council involvement," she said.
The uprising against the regime and the resulting government crackdown have engulfed the country for more than 10 months. The United Nations last month estimated that more than 5,000 people have died since March. Opposition groups are estimating a higher death toll. The Local Coordination Committees of Syria said Tuesday more than 6,600 deaths have been documented since the unrest began. Avaaz, a political activist group, says it has exceeded 7,000.
At least 60 people were killed Tuesday in Syria, the LCC said. Forty-one died in Homs -- 18 of them when two buildings were shelled in the city's Bab Tadmur neighborhood. The other deaths occurred in Hama, Idlib, Raqqa, Daraa, Douma and Damascus, the group said.
The Syrian government has categorically rejected the Arab League plan for the transfer of power.
Moallem said the league report "violates the sovereignty of Syria." He said the observer mission report, which showed that Syria fulfilled the mission's protocol, was replaced with a "political report."
Speaking to reporters at a press conference in Damascus, Moallem said his country needed "a Syrian solution driven by Syrian interests," which would be based on achieving al-Assad's reform plan.
Moallem also repeated his government's contention that the Syrian uprising is driven by a "conspiracy." He said some Arab entities are "implanting the stages of the plot against Syria which they agreed upon abroad."
"We are perfectly aware of the dimension of the conspiracy and we will deal with it firmly," the foreign minister said, adding that "it is the duty of the Syrian government to deal seriously and firmly with armed elements."
Syria blames the bloodshed on armed terrorists, and Moallem said the number of armed groups has sharply increased since the mission's arrival December 26.
Moallem also noted that Iran has been a solid and supportive ally and that sanctions imposed on Syria have exacerbated the economic crisis and caused suffering.
Russia will also "not agree on the foreign interference in Syria's internal affairs and this is a red line," Moallem said about the key member of the U.N. Security Council. "During talks with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Michael Bugdanov, I sensed that the Russian stance is solid and no one can question the Russian-Syrian relations as they are deep-rooted."
Journalist Mohamed Fadel Fahmy and CNN's Hamdi Alkhshali, Joe Sterling, Nada Husseini and Yousuf Basil contributed to this report.

We couldn't run our charity shop without Jenny, 81, says boss
A DEVOTED volunteer who has worked at a charity shop in Bedminster for nearly 20 years has been singled out for special praise by her manager.
Jenny Anstey, 81, takes great pleasure in putting in three shifts every week at the Age UK shop in East Street.
Working behind the till, the former nurse has developed a great relationship with colleagues and customers over the years.
The shop's manager Tony Sadler believes the great-grandmother is a perfect example of a great volunteer and deserves recognition.
He said: "She's really good with the customers and does extra hours if we need her to. She's just a real trooper and we couldn't run the shop without her.
"I want people to read about the hard work she does for the shop. I'm so pleased she's here with us, helping out. She's an example to anyone who wants to go into volunteering and has shown that you are never too old."
Ms Anstey believes what she does is nothing out of the ordinary.
The pensioner, who lives in Bedminster, began working at the shop 19 years ago after retiring from her job as an auxiliary nurse at Keynsham Hospital.
The mother-of-three does three five-hour shifts at the shop in Imperial Arcade each week.
Ms Anstey said: "I keep telling the women who say they are lonely to do what I'm doing. Most of us in the shop have all been there for years because we like it and we've had good managers and manageresses.
"If you didn't like it, you wouldn't stick with it. But I love it.
"I'm on the till and I sort out the clothes and do all sorts. The shop sells everything from children's stuff to men's stuff, household things and a lot of new goods."
Glasgow-born Ms Anstey says she has a good rapport with customers, many of whom are regulars.
She said: "People come in and say 'Hello, Jenny' and tell me about their history."
Ms Anstey says she has no plans to quit her volunteering work just yet.
She said: "At my age, a lot of people think they couldn't do it. But one lady who worked in the shop died last year and she was 90.
"Tony says I might be in there until I'm 90 but I doubt it. I couldn't say how long I will carry on working here."

Ten Six Consulting Predicts the Hot Topics for Project Management in 2012
Jon Swain, President of Ten Six Consulting, LLC, predicts that cloud computing, outsourcing, the economy, Agile leadership and change management will drive project management during 2012.
Virginia Beach, Virginia (PRWEB) January 17, 2012
This year holds a number of challenges for project management professionals, predicts Jon Swain, President of Virginia Beach enterprise project management consultancy Ten Six Consulting, LLC. He is forecasting that the rise in mobile technology and cloud computing, deeper partnerships with outsourcers and the continued difficult economic conditions will impact projects during 2012. Debates about Agile leadership and change management will further test project managers and their teams this year. These will be the top five hot topics for project management over the next 12 months.
1. The number of projects in the cloud will increase
The adoption rate of mobile devices such as tablets continues to grow. ?We?ll see more project managers involved in software projects for mobile devices,? said Swain. He also predicts that the number of project management software vendors enabling access to their products from mobile devices will increase. ?Project managers need to keep on top of their projects while travelling, so the demand for access to their management software via tablets and phones is on the up,? he added. ?A natural extension of this is that project management software will become more cloud-based.?
2. Outsourcers will form an integral part of project teams
Outsourcers are no longer on the periphery of projects. With companies focusing on their core competencies and generating savings by using outsourcing partners, suppliers will become an integral part of project teams. ?The increase in cloud computing is helping supplier partners integrate into project teams,? says Swain. ?They are able to work on projects with the same systems as their customers. We?re seeing more and more projects start with a decision about whose enterprise project management tools to use, and the growth of virtual teams and cloud computing makes that possible.?
3. Challenging economic conditions means reducing costs is still important
Companies are still nervous about over-investing during such difficult market conditions. ?Many organizations have already stripped out costs through process improvement projects,? said Swain, ?but there is still more to do.? This year will see companies reviewing internal processes and looking for additional cost savings to be delivered through projects.
4. Leadership buy-in is required for Agile
Many companies have adopted Agile methods as a way to consistently deliver projects while working with changing requirements. The traditional roles in an Agile team will evolve as leading Agile projects becomes established as a skill set in its own right. ?Agile leadership is a hot topic for 2012,? said Swain. ?As Agile gains a greater foothold in companies, we?ll see senior managers becoming more aware of the benefits of Agile and what it can deliver. Agile requires a different organizational culture and mindset, and Agile leaders need to establish and embed that so project teams using Agile methods can operate most effectively.?
5. Project management will extend to include change management
?In times of economic difficulty, companies can?t afford for change not to stick,? said Swain. ?Integrating change into the organization is imperative to ensure that the investment is not diluted, or worse, wasted.? Managing transformational change will be top of the agenda for C-suite executives as they move to make sure that the return on any investment is assured. Projects will involve more than just the completion of deliverables, as the role of project manager as leader of change evolves.

Is The Unified Tribe A Good System?
Full-time: Brighton & Hove Albion 2, Bristol City 0
Bristol City's attempts to move clear of relegation trouble faltered in West Sussex as they went down 2-0 to Brighton at the Amex Stadium.
The Seagulls made light of a crippling injury list to deservedly take all three points against opponents who again lacked quality going forward and seldom looked like scoring.
Skipper Inigo Calderon beat David James with a thunderbolt from 25 yards to open the scoring eight minutes before half time, the Spaniard registering his first goal of the season.
And impressive winger Will Buckley made the game safe for the home side 17 minutes from time, making the most of hesitancy at the heart of the City defence to beat James with a low shot.
Without the injured Albert Adomah, City simply lacked the invention and menace to get back into the game and they failed to muster a single on-target effort in 90 minutes.
Armed with new signings Richard Foster and Chris Wood, City manager Derek McInnes opted to ditch his normal 4-5-1 formation and start with a more attacking 4-4-2 formation.
On-loan West Bromwich Albion forward Wood played up alongside Nicky Maynard, while former Aberdeen captain Foster fitted in at right-back in a side showing three changes from the one beaten by Crawley in the FA Cup seven days earlier.
If Foster demonstrated an impressive turn of pace when overlapping on the right, Wood showed early signs of building an understanding with eight-goal top-scorer Maynard, finding his fellow marksman on a number of occasions during the first half.
But goal-scoring chances remained few and far between and the nearest the Robins came to unsettling Brighton was when Marvin Elliott ran onto Martyn Woolford's cross and sent his shot wide of the target from 18 yards out.
But the visitors appeared comfortable in their team shape and Brighton, seeking to take the game to their opponents, were largely frustrated as they struggled to penetrate a well-orchestrated defence.
Craig Mackail-Smith threatened midway through the first half when bursting onto Will Buckley's through ball, but the former Peterborough marksman over-ran the ball and the opportunity was lost.
That was Mackail-Smith's last contribution, the forward li8mping off with an injury on 23 minutes, to be replaced by ex-Bristol Rovers star Will Hoskins.
Already depleted by injury, the Seagulls suffered further disruption five minutes later, Jake Forster-Caskey hobbling off and being replaced by Alan Navarro, much to manager Gus Poyet's frustration.
Navarro was immediately involved, racing onto Matt Sparrow's centre and firing his shot over the bar and into the 2,000 City fans packed behind the goal.
When Brighton did finally break the deadlock on 37 minutes, the goal came out of the blue. There appeared little danger when Seagulls captain Inigo Calderon collected a pass from Liam Bridcutt five yards in from the right touchline. But the right-back cut in and unleashed a sweetly-struck drive from 25 yards that beat the despairing dive of Robins keeper David James and ended up in the far top corner.
City tried to respond and Foster made a forward foray deep into Albion territory and picked out Elliott on the edge of the penalty area, only for the Londoner to make a hash of his attempted shot.
Brighton almost doubled their lead in time added on at the end of the first half, Sparrow trying his luck from range and James going full-length to tip the ball over.
Having no doubt received an earful from manager McInnes during the interval, City emerged for the second half in more purposeful mood and Maynard put Brighton keeper Peter Brezovan under pressure for the first time, narrowly losing out in the race for Wood's flicked header.
As in the first half, though, the contest was high on endeavour but woefully lacking on quality and Navarro wasted a chance for the home side, leaning back and directing his shot ludicrously high and wide from 20 yards out.
McInnes made two changes, one out of choice, the other from necessity, replacing the ineffective Woolford with Yannick Bolasie and then sending on Kalifa Cisse for the injured Elliott.
Although the visitors defended well enough and looked a solid unit, they simply lacked the midfield creativity to supply frontrunners Maynard and Wood with any kind of meaningful service.
Brighton made sure of the points 17 minutes from time, Buckley running onto Hoskins' flicked header and sliding his angled shot past James and into the far corner. It was a goal borne out of City's hesitation, Louis Carey waiting in vain for his goalkeeper to come and collect the loose ball and allowing Hoskins to take advantage.
McInnes threw Brett Pitman on in a bid to salvage something from the game, but apart from a Foster cross that narrowly eluded the in-rushing Maynard, City did not look like scoring.
Brighton (4-1-4-1): Brezovan; Calderon, Dunk, El-Abd, Vincelot; Bridcutt; Buckley, Sparrow, Forster-Caskey (Navarro 28), Barnes; Mackail-Smith (Hoskins 23).
City (4-4-4): James; Foster, Carey, Nyatanga, McGivern; Skuse, Elliott (Cisse 70), Kilikenny (Pitman 78), Woolford (Bolasie 62); Wood, Maynard.
